FUAL Delegation to Council, Monday April 2nd, 2012

Fuals Manure Maven Workshop Delegation

A member of Fual has become Lantzvilles very own Manure maven. Jamie Wallace, a spokesperson for Fual, attended a Manure maven workshop last month in Abbostford which was hosted by LEPS (Langely Environmental Partnership Society).

The Manure Maven Workshop was started in 2006 by LEPS in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Together they produced the Land Management Guild for Horse Owners and Small lot farmers.

The Horse Manure Composting Program was born to provide horse owners with  resources and technical assistance.

Since its inception the program has grown substantially, serving property owners across the provinces of BC and Alberta as well as the states of  Washington, Florida and California.

It is estimated that there are 96 horses within the district of Lantzvilles boundaries at seventeen different facilities producing 4450 lbs per day or 1.624 million pounds of manure per year.

What are our options ?

  • Ban horses
  • Require that all manure be exported
  • Embrace and encourage safe handling and composting methods
Lantzville council has identified the importance of safe manure handling and its potential threat to our community. The Manure Maven workshop is endorsed by the Ministry Of Agriculture and Environment and reduces the likelihood of harm when using safe composting practices. These guidelines turn a byproduct into a resource and protect water systems.

Fual wants to provide horse owners, and anyone else interested in composting horse manure with the tools needed to compost safely. FUALS first Manure maven workshop will be held April 29th 2012 at Pyramid Stables in Lantzville.

To pre-register for the workshop email Jamie Wallace at jfcwallace@shaw.ca

Some of the topics we will cover:

  • Why should we compost?
  • Manure’s benefit when composted
  • Agricultural Waste Control Regulations
  • How Do I Compost?
  • The Composting Process
  • How Do I Know It’s Done?
  • Troubleshooting composting problems
